AEIOU Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Rosemaria Flaherty as the organisation’s new Chief Executive Officer, commencing Monday, 17 November 2025.
Following a comprehensive national search process, Dr Flaherty was selected from a strong field of high-calibre candidates and will lead AEIOU into the future.
AEIOU Foundation’s Chair, Mark Algie, said the Board is confident Dr Flaherty will lead AEIOU with vision and commitment as the sector continues to navigate through NDIS changes.
“Dr Flaherty and the Board are aligned and deeply committed to AEIOU’s future vision and strategic direction,” Mr Algie said. “We are excited to welcome her as we continue building on AEIOU’s legacy of delivering high-quality, evidence-based services for children with autism and their families.
“Dr Flaherty’s extensive leadership experience across health, social services and child protection sectors along with deep expertise in government engagement, policy reform, complex change management, and organisational and cultural transformation will support the next stage of AEIOU’s development.
“As the sector navigates upcoming NDIS changes for autistic children with the introduction of the 'Thriving Kids' program, there is a lot of work for us to do to make sure all children with autism have access to the level of support they need to thrive.
“Rosa’s expertise as a registered Senior Psychologist, with a PhD in Psychology, alongside postgraduate qualifications in business administration and counselling psychology will be pivotal in supporting our mission.”
Upon her appointment, Dr Flaherty said how honoured she was to join AEIOU Foundation and be part of creating a supportive and inclusive community for autistic children.
“It’s an honour to join AEIOU Foundation at such a pivotal time in the organisation’s journey,” Dr Flaherty said. “My focus as incoming CEO is to ensure more children with autism, and their families, experience the life-changing outcomes AEIOU Foundation is known for.
“Together with our partners, we’ll continue to create a community where every child’s potential is nourished and celebrated.”
AEIOU Foundation would like to acknowledge outgoing CEO Alan Smith, who is retiring after more than 16 years of dedicated service. Under Alan’s leadership, AEIOU has expanded by eight centres, extended its services beyond Queensland into the ACT and South Australia, diversified its service offering, and strengthened its reputation as a leading provider of early intervention for children with autism.
“Alan’s contribution has been fundamental to everything AEIOU has achieved. On behalf of the Board, we thank him sincerely and wish him every success in retirement,” Mr Algie said.
